2012 ACT Junior Open

Last week from 12-14th Apr saw 8 of our 11 juniors participating in the ACT Junior Open event.

Ernest, Zac, Tiana, Sarah, Kathryn, Alex Willey, Ryan and Ben.

We fielded players in 5 divisions;

U17 Boys
U15 Boys
U13 Boys
U11 Boys, and
U15 Girls

There were a number of successful players with Tiana winning the U15 Girls and Ben winning the U11 Boys divisions.

Congratulations to Tiana and Ben.

We also took out the trifecta in the U15 girls with Sarah coming in runner up and Kathryn placed 3rd.

For those not familiar with tournament play it takes an enormous emotional and physical effort to compete against the best players available and most of our players were doubling up from the Aust Junior Open just a few days earlier. So for these young people to keep it together and perform above their best was a huge effort regardless of finishing position.

I did not get to see all matches but those I watched made me proud of our player’s, whether playing the best in the country or even one of our own, they gave 110% each time they went on court and played with exceptional sportsmanship and courage.

A special mention to Ernest and Zac, for players that have only been playing a few months it would have been daunting just to enter, to turn up to every match with smile and play the best juniors in Aust and know the outcome is especially tough. These boys not only turned up but put everything into each match.

The improvement in each player throughout the last two weeks is probably too big to measure, they won’t realise how much they have improved for some time.

To all of our players from myself and Jeremy well done, you served yourselves and the club with distinction.

Before I finish  - HAPPY BIRTHDAY Ernest.

For those that are interested the link below will take you to the results.

Junior training commences next Sunday.

2012 Australian Junior Open

What a busy week at Woden squash courts for the Inaugural Australian Junior Open.

Around 180 junior squash hopefuls from around Australia and overseas descended on Woden squash courts.

Queanbeyan Leagues Squash Club had 6 representative,s and although none of our players took out the competition they all put everything they had into representing themselves and the club.

Considering the "squash age" of some of our members, it was no wonder they were a bit starry eyed and full of nerves as they walked on court in their first ever large tournament match to face the top seeded players from around the country and abroad. All of our players acquitted themselves well and we should be proud of them.

Final placing’s for our players were;

Matthew Hall – U19 Boys – #26
Alex Willey (aka Mr Willet) - U15 Boys – #30
Ryan Martin – U13 Boys – #19
Tiana Saxby – U15 Girls – #11
Sarah Keen - U15 Girls – #16
Kathryn Martin – U15 Girls - #14

Juniors Come 'n' Try Day 2012

We kicked of the 2012 squash year with a Come’N’Try day at junior training on Sunday (5/2/2012)

We had a great turn out from last year’s juniors and everyone was happy to see Connor back on the courts.

We had the Dickie family turn up with their daughters Kayla and Riley (smiley) and  friend  Sophie Lyris as well as Nic Jonsson and son Emil. Welcome to all of you.

We had some fun as well as the normal fitness and warm up training, the Come’N”Try kids did some new squashies skill and learning events while last year’s juniors tried to blow off the cobwebs.

Although the numbers were small we might pickup 2-3 juniors and as bonus seemed to pick up a couple of seniors as well. So a successful day.

The day could not have been possible without the support of the following people;

Trev (ankle) Scorer there as always on the scout for potential premier players, Matthew Hall and Adam Flemming who looked after the warm-ups and the returning juniors.  Gavin Jackson who helped on court with our guests and on the BBQ, Lorraine who entertained the parents topside and on BBQ, and as always the tireless Jeremy (El Presidento).

Thank You all.

Social/Novice Comp

The club is pleased to advise that it will be starting an in-house social/novice comp this season.  It’ll be for players wanting an organised social hit, and/or players looking to go from social to pennant squash (a bridging comp).  Senior players will be providing coaching and rules tuition, and players will be covered by SRA insurance.  It will be held on Thursday evenings at UC.

Results of Valleys Inaugural Junior Challenge

This weekend (6, 7 August 2011) saw the Valleys Club hold their inaugural junior challenge tournament. The Club put on an excellent tournament and I believe it will become a permanent fixture.

30 juniors from across Canberra and Queanbeyan participated in a number of age based divisions. The Queanbeyan Leagues Club had 7 participants in the following divisions

  • Under 15 A Mixed - Tiana Saxby
  • Under 15 B Mixed - Connor McDonald and Sarah Keen
  • Under 13 Girls - Kathryn Martin
  • Under 13 Boys - Alex Carrick and Ryan Martin
  • Under 11 Boys - Ben Keen

All of our members played extremely well and seem to have even gained skills over the break.

All players were a buzz when the World #1 players, Nick Matthew and Nicol David  turned up to present winners and runner up prizes, and I'm sure that anything that wasn't tied down was presented for autograph signing.

We had some success with Connor winning his division and Sarah runner up. Connor won a racquet of his choice and I'm sure he will have a great pennant season with his new weapon.

Ben was also runner up in his division. No one should walk away disappointed as everyone played extremely competitive squash. It was a good start to the season and gives everyone something to improve upon. A mention to Tiana and her mum Elissa, who made the trip down each day from Goulburn.

Once a again a well done to all players.

Also special mention to Julian Carrick (Alex’s Dad) who some how was awarded the over 17 division prize (won the raffle) and made sure he got his picture with the world's best players.
