President's Message

Hello and thankyou for taking the time to visit the website of the Queanbeyan Leagues Squash Club.  Queanbeyan has a long and proud history with squash, indeed in the games hey-day there were three sets of courts in Queanbeyan supported by two thriving clubs.

Queanbeyan also boasts being the home of squash legend Heather McKay, the undisputed greatest female player who dominated the game in the 60’s and 70’s.  Also in more recent times Kellie Cuschieri competed at the local, national and international level for some 15 years.

Today squash finds itself making a resurgence after being challenged by a host of other indoor sports over the last decade or so.  Although some courts are closing in the region, there are plans for new courts and venue upgrades in the not too distant future.  Canberra will also be hosting the Australian Squash Open until 2014.

On the home front we are lobbying the Queanbeyan City Council for the provision of courts in the proposed Indoor Sports Precinct - although this will probably be some time off.  We have however partnered with the University of Canberra (UC) as our home venue.  We enjoy a very positive relationship with the UC Sports Centre Management, and the arrangement opens the Club to potential players from the Belconnen/Gunghalin region, indeed half our clubs players are Canberra residents.

As a club we are fortunate to have extremely loyal members who have remained with the club despite the closure of the Queanbeyan courts in mid 2007. In fact our player numbers have consecutively grown in the last five seasons since then, a feat not matched by any other local squash club, and includes a remarkable 16 new players joining the club in 2010.

2011 sees the beginning of a new era for the club.  We will be fielding our first players in ACT juniors competition, re-introducing a team into div 1/premier grade (including Canberra's no. 1 player - Tim Manning), and have built a strong relationship with the University of Canberra (UC) to be our home venue.  Player numbers in the club have more than doubled in the last 3 years, including a significant increase in female players.

I believe that our clubs current success is due to a number of factors; the friendship and camaraderie between members, the hard work of the committee to foster that culture - striving for the betterment of the club, and the financial sponsorship of the Queanbeyan Leagues Club, enabling us to be the most affordable local club including the provision of club shirts, trophies and awards.

I believe that the future looks bright for the club and for squash in general.  There are a lot of people at the club, regional and national administration levels working to ensure that squash once again prospers.  Squash has a lot to offer players; it compliments other sports with out-of-season or cross-training benefits, and according to a 2008 Forbes magazine survey, it concluded that squash was the world’s healthiest sport to play.

Perhaps you played squash years ago, are looking for a sport to help you get back in to shape, or want to take up something during your off-season - squash is perfect.  It’s played year round, offers the challenge of a one-on-one contest on the court, whilst being part of a team trying to win a season pennant.  It's social aspect also contributes greatly to its appeal with many players continuing to play year after year.

If you are considering playing squash, please have a look at the rest of the website to see what the Queanbeyan Leagues Squash Club has to offer.  If you are interested in joining us, or just trying things out, then please don’t hesitate to contact either Phil Gallagher or myself.

We look forward to hearing from you in the near future.

Kind Regards,

Jeremy Keen
