The club is pleased to advise that it will be starting an in-house social/novice comp this season. It’ll be for players wanting an organised social hit, and/or players looking to go from social to pennant squash (a bridging comp). Senior players will be providing coaching and rules tuition, and players will be covered by SRA insurance. It will be held on Thursday evenings at UC.

Congratulations to div 13 player Glenn Jarvis on recently receiving a NSW Carers Award for dedicated service to the community.
Please see the attached Queanbeyan Age article.
Congratulations to Justin and Kirstin Caldwell for getting married on 15th April in Fiji. Fair excuse for not going to Coota.
Eighteen of the Club’s more dedicated players made the trip down the Hume Highway to Cootamundra on the weekend, for the second annual Queanbeyan/Cootamundra Squash Challenge.
The club’s best players ventured down on Friday evening for a bit of social squash, followed by a strategy session at the Central Hotel. As it turns out, drinking with the non-preferred hand is fraught with all sorts of dangers and Scotches at 3am certainly don’t help your squash game the following day. Although oddly enough, a 9am Gin and Tonic certainly lifted Sam Bobos’ game.
Dinosaurs were handed out and hung onto for dear life (unless your name is Gavin Jackson) and the formal proceedings started on Saturday morning. After a few matches, we all got dressed up and headed to the picnic races. Gav’s dinosaur chose not to come to the races.
Secret Dynamite was the club’s most successful horse, with many people jumping on number three with some success. The aptly named Low Flying Duck failed to impress.
Without a doubt, the lowlight of the day at the races was the poorly judged fashions on the field. Spurred on by Dutch Courage and a financial incentive from Trevor Scorer, Mitchell Fox was robbed when the judges awarded best dressed young male to some guy in a purple shirt.
We returned to the Central for a formal debrief and further strategy session. Some people strategised until the wee morning hours.
Sunday morning saw the final day’s play on what was a great weekend. Scorer, looking like death warmed up arrived late and was rightly fined. He then copped a nasty hit on the finger by Cootamundra President Tony Sheedy.
We took out the honours for the weekend’s squash, losing only six matches all weekend. Cootamundra Squash Club official Tony Sheedy judged Naveen Wijemanne as Queanbeyan’s most valuable player for the weekend. Keen selected Steven Cross as Cootamundra’s MVP.
Together, the clubs raised more than $750 for Camp Quality. For those interested, it only costs $20 bucks to hit Trev pretty hard with your racquet, certainly worth a think!
Big thanks to all those involved helping make the second trip to Coota a great weekend. Special praise to Trevor Scorer for making most of the arrangements.

Through-out 2010 the club has been collecting money to donate to Camp Quality. The money has mostly come from “fines” associated with various games/activities/shenanigans on the Cootmundra and Bega inter club challenges. There was also some money raised from a Hawaiian Shirt day.
At the Club Championships in December, Donn McMichael - the Regional Manager of Camp Quality, was presented with a cheque for $680. Donn expressed his sincere gratitude at the donation, particularly at this time when donations to Camp Quality were declining. He said the money would greatly assist those families living with a child with cancer.
Thank-you to all those who contributed through the year, it was a privilege on your behalf to pass on the donation.
Cheers,
Jeremy Keen
We got stroked at QBN/Bega Squash Challenge
There was more than one case of Déjà vu as many of the club’s more dedicated players and their partners travelled to Bega for the second (now annual) Queanbeyan /Bega Squash Challenge;
· assembling at the McDonalds Queanbeyan at the crack of dawn
· the pink shirt of shame
· sampling some of the world’s best pies at Nimmitabel
· Bob Martin’s penchant for BLT’s
· checking into the Commercial Hotel (although some chose The Bank, just down the road)
· playing in sweltering conditions
· and driving home in pouring rain – just to name a few.
Most notably though, the people of Bega are incredible hosts and a great deal of fun was had by all.
A new, but somewhat familiar game was added to this year’s challenge – plastic animals were handed out to all players and fines issued for not showing due diligence protecting said animals. Serious breaches meant the guilty party had to either wear the shirt of shame, or look after a large teddy bear.
Despite the heat, we took out the honours in all four divisions, though there were some challenges. Bega’s Troy Northey was too strong for our club’s best squash players and few from either side managed to keep a hold of their plastic animals.
In the end, we retained the tournament shield, Tom Rueger was voted Queanbeyan’s most valuable player, Craig Bassett was voted Bega’s MVP and we raised more than $300 for Camp Quality through fines. Other highlights included:
· Andrew Bomm travelling all the way from Wagga Wagga to participate
· Gavin’s camera envy when the Bega District News arrived with a bigger lens
· Witnessing a Lunar Eclipse – the Moon’s disappearing completely on Sunday
All in all it was a terrific weekend and it was great to see so many partners come along for the fun. Big thanks to Trev and Jeremy from Queanbeyan, Dennis, Dick from Bega and anyone who helped make the weekend such a success.
We hope to see you at the next trip!

After yet again another highly successful season (winning 7 of 16 pennants), in excess of 30 players from Queanbeyan Leagues Squash club meet at the Ainslie Football Club to enjoy a meal and a few cold drinks to celebrate.
The night kicked off around 7:30pm with Mitchell Fox (Bega President Best Player) showing fine form signing in excess of 50 percent of the Queanbeyan players. Excellent skills displayed all around.
After a few more cold beverages, we finally made our way to our table and enjoyed a lovely meal and yes, a few more cold drinks. It shortly became evident that a few of the newly recruited members enjoyed the social atmosphere so famously provided by the squash club. This was clearly evident by increased noise and a larger than normal presence of security staff - after a quick word, Shane, Matt and Robyn took their seats and behaved for the remainder of the meal.
After the meal, Club President Jeremy Keen took centre stage and congratulated all players for a highly successful season and continued with the formalities.
Jeremy presented the following players with Queanbeyan Squash Club squash bags for not just winning a pennant, but also increasing their Matrix's rating by in excess of 10 points;
Nathan Treasure, Jonathon Alder, Robert Moon, Naveen Wijemanne, Andrew Bomm, Jason Kruyer, Chris Moon, Justin Caldwell, John Mannweiler and Mitchell Fox.
Other team members from the winning Div 3, 4, 7, 8, 12, 13, 16 teams were presented with embroidered Queanbeyan Squash Club towels.
In a big surprise, Jeremy came through with the goods and cleaned out his personal trophy cabinet and presented trophies to the 2009 Queanbeyan Squash Club Champions;
A Grade - Trevor Scorer, B Grade - Robert Moon, C Grade - Chris Moon and D Grade - James Buckley.
A special presentation was made to the "Cootamundra Presidents Best Player" - Chris Moon. As it was fast approaching 9pm, well past Chris's bed time he gratefully accepted his accolade and departed for sleepy byes.
This concluded the formalities of the night and prior to the majority of the players departing Shane White thanked the club president Jeremy Keen for his continued efforts in ensuring the club run’s smoothly.
On completion a number of players kicked on well into the morning and I envisage a few sore heads (some with cuts on them) may have been experienced the next morning.
Let’s hope we can have a successful Spring Pennant and plan another night out celebrating more pennants and hopefully Queanbeyan winning the Club Championship.

The Queanbeyan Leagues Squash Club has just completed a successful introduction to squash for juniors in the Queanbeyan-ACT region. The program was conducted at the Woden Squash Centre from 26th June to 17th July, and was attended by a total of 15 children over the four weeks.
The sessions were designed as a fun introduction to squash, with an aim to providing sufficient interest amongst Queanbeyan/ACT children to allow the club to enter Queanbeyan juniors into the ACT junior competition. All of the children attending had a serious amount of fun, with good numbers showing interest in continuing squash as a sport of choice. As a follow on the club will now take a number of the children on at club practice (at the University of Canberra courts), with an aim of running a mini competition and coaching in preparation for 2011 junior competition.
Lots of thanks should go to Jeremy Keen for his enthusiasm for getting the junior program of the ground, and the those members of the club (Bob Martin, Justin Caldwell, Jayson Brenton, John Mannweiler, Michael Green, and David Porter) that gave up their Saturday's to come along and provide support and coaching for the children. A special thank you should also be passed on the Pat Siciliano, in his role as ACT Junior Development Officer; he not only provided advise, ideas and practical on-court expertise to the volunteer coaches, but spent many hours with the kids ensuring the success of the event.
The club is also co-ordinating with Pat and St Greg’s Primary School Queanbeyan (Michael Green and Justin Caldwell), a school visit with an inflatable squash court. This has been used with huge success by Squash NSW, and it is hoped to generate more interest in squash amongst children, and act as a catalyst for kids to try junior squash. This will lead into a similar Come N Try Program later in the year to try and attract the next budding Heather McKay or David Palmer, so watch your emails or this website for dates.
